3 Quick Strategies to Build Confidence & Respond Effectively

Stay Calm, Create Space

Why: Your calm body language and voice help de-escalate tension and show authority.

How:
Take a step back to create space (physical and emotional), use a calm tone, and pause before speaking.

Use a Safety-Focused Script

Why: Having a set phrase ready reduces panic and shows you’re in control.
How: For example:
• “That’s not safe – we need to stop now.”
• “I appreciate you’re upset – let’s talk where we can work through this.”
• “Can I get support at my lane, please?” (Pre-agreed help signal)

Protect & Prioritise

Why: In high-risk moments, it’s essential to act fast and prioritise safety.
How:
• Move students away from danger
• Call for help immediately (use signals or support plan)
• Afterward, document and debrief the incident with your team or supervisor

“The course was very well delivered and really echoed how to deal with real-life situations. Kudos to our teacher for having that knowledge!”
